Toyota bags in profit worth $1.2 billion during recall!

Toyota - www.motoroids.com
The past few months have been raining ‘recalls’, out of which, Toyota had the largest ever global recall. What most of the common men must have thought is that Toyota is going to have a time of its life with a huge loss ever recorded owing to the massive recall. The firm had announced the recall due to a faulty gas pedal. However, in reality the story has proved to be something totally different. Toyota reported a profit of about $1.2 billion from January to March, this year which was the crucial time of its recall.

What amuses us most is the fact that the firm has managed the profit in spite of the expenditures incurred due to the recall which amounted to a little more than a billion dollars (100 billion Yen). To add to the pressure, Toyota also reported a fall in profits as compared to last year owing to the unprecedented spate of incentives to keep sales rolling.

The firm’s head Akio Toyoda, mentioned that they would continue to boost profits by offering high quality, reasonably priced vehicles. However, we hope the high quality part does not repeat with another world wide recall. The firm may not be this lucky next time.

Toyota may launch Diesel Corolla Altis!

Toyota Kirloskar Motors have managed to sell more than 40,000 units of its Corolla since the last five years. Looking at this success, the firm has considered launching a diesel powered Corolla Altis in the near future. Owing to the improved power, performance and efficiency, the Japanese Marquee has observed that diesel powered luxury sedans are gaining popularity in the Indian market.

The diesel Corolla Altis may bear a 1.4-litre turbo diesel engine that currently powers the Yaris hatchback in other countries. Various sources claim that according to Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the car will deliver a mileage of 21.42 km per litre. However, the company has not yet confirmed these facts.

“As India is an emerging market for Toyota, it will keep on rolling out new models as well as variants. The company is exploring various options and diesel-powered Corolla Altis is definitely on the cards. As a company policy, details like fuel efficiency and other specifications cannot be shared right now. But yes, we are launching it by either July-end or during early August. All the details would be shared at that point of time,” said a senior company official.

Toyota Prius by Tommy Kaira and ASI

Eco-friendly cars are the talk of the town for the moment. Every manufacturer is either producing one or planning to. Toyota is an acknowledged leader in the field with its Prius hybrid as well as others. Few respected tuners have embraced the green thing so far, unless they are based in Japan where it almost seems the government has a decree forcing tuners to work on "green" cars as well.

How else do you explain the flurry of activity coming from enviro-friendly garages around the country? This Prius done by Tommi Kaira is but one of these. It features low front lips, big front air dams shaped like those of an Audi R8, thick rims, wide side skirts and a new rear bumper. The Prius logo is missing, as is the discretion normally linked to the car. Most striking though are the four tailpipes which do not in any way suggest "green". In fact they have the opposite effect on the eye.

Cars like the GT-R or the Impreza STI are well-suited for power and body upgrades. They are expected to pollute the eardrum along with the planet, and their fans love them for it. Prius and Honda Insight are quite different simply because of the statement they make.

There certainly is a future in eco-tuning (new word for you) but no one is quite sure what it looks like. That's perhaps why cars like this one could be discarded in current tuning circles. One such tuner is Ben Schaffer, owner of Bespoke Ventures. His company is a major American/international parts distributor and marketer for top Japanese tuning brands (KenStyle, Top Secret). Schaffer's view is that eco is good yes, but it has no place in the world of powerhouses like the R35 GT-R. Moderation is the key instead of jumping on the bandwagon. He reminds his fellow competitors/colleagues not to lose sight of their core business and enthusiasm which is sports cars.

2009 Toyota Tundra TR Concept at SEMA

At this year's SEMA show, it seems like there's a Toyota Tundra concept truck to answer every trucking question that Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge have ever posed. The TR Concept addresses the issue raised by trucks like the Ford Lightning, Dodge Ram SRT-10 and Chevrolet SS454: what is the best way to get a pickup truck down the quarter-mile as quickly as possible?
The Tundra TR is outfitted to be a drag-racing "sleeper," thanks to an exterior that's notable for its almost complete lack of adornment. 18-inch steel wheels and blacked-out trim front and rear give it a menacing, purposeful look.
Starting with the lightest Tundra in the lineup, the regular cab, short-bed model, this 4x2, 5.7 liter V8-equipped show truck has been outfitted with a "Thunder Pak," which consists of a TRD lowered suspension and ceramic-coated black exhaust, as well as a supercharger. Just in case that's not enough to squirt it past the other drag trucks, the Tundra TR can also bring 150-horsepower shots of nitrous to the table.

Toyota Tundra Diesel Dually Project Truck at SEMA 2008

In the realm of full-size pickup trucks, payload and towing capacity are just as significant as Nurburgring lap times are for the Porsche and Ferrari crowd. That's what's exciting about this diesel-powered, dual rear wheel (DRW) equipped Toyota Tundra that's appearing at SEMA. Put together by Toyota Motorsports' Technical Group, the menacing, charcoal gray truck stands as an answer to those who insist that the newly-upsized Tundra is a less serious truck than the competition from Ford and Chevrolet.

Under the hood, there's an 8.0 liter inline six-cylinder turbodiesel Hino commercial truck engine. A healthy five-speed manual transmission and a Hino DRW rear end get the power to the ground and boost this stretched Tundra's capacity. 22.5-inch wheels are provided by Alcoa. Toyota didn't release specifications, but the Tundra's fifth-wheel hitch is rated at 24,000 pounds. No word on if such a truck is a serious consideration for production, or if it's just truck-guy chest-thumping.

TRD Tundra Double Cab

Designers at Toyota Racing Development present a project closer to home: the Tundra Double Cab Off-Road Concept And Trailer. Based off a standard 6.5-feet truck bed, the Tundra is a showcase of TRD products that combine to give the ability to tow a large trailer, similar to those used in motorsport but which at SEMA will show visitors a variety of products in a new light.

The Tundra's 5.7-litre V8 engine has been given the supercharged treatment, with TRD's new supercharger and integrated liquid-to-air intercooling system boosting output to 500 hp.

The principle changes to the body are the styling of more aggressive front and rear fascias as well as new five-inch wider side fenders that complement the form of the truck's accompanying 28-foot long custom Featherlite trailer. To facilitate towing, the rear also gains a trailer hitch.

Inside (the trailer), SEMA visitors can get a look at the internal workings of Toyota Racing Development technologies such as the latest TRD superchargers and limited-slip differentials, see the latest wheel designs or be shown how the Off-Road Concept Tundra was born.

Toyota TRD Tundra Street Concept at SEMA 2008

Toyota Racing Development have created the TRD Tundra Street Concept, a vehicle which has been lowered, charged, restyled and most importantly significantly customised to satisfy SEMA 2008's performance-seeking crowds.

Based on 2007's Toyota Tundra and featuring the stock 5.7-litre DOHC VVTi V8 engine, the Street Concept hosts a range of supporting technical and styling upgrades, namely starting with the supercharging and intercooling of its V8 powerplant. The Eaton Roots-type supercharger features integrated air-to-liquid intercooling, while a TRD cold air intake system provides the necessary air flow improvements. A stainless dual exhaust and uprated TRD brake system also join the technical upgrades.

Modified suspension arrives hand-in-hand with a stance-enhancing lowered ride height and is joined by a revised front grille and front fascia, restyled bumper arrangement, new bed cover and integrated spoiler in creating a more aggressive look. A custom red paint job and 16-inch forged alloys complete the restyle. Inside and leather touches adorn central console and inner door, while seat fabrics also get the custom touch.

Toyota Land Cruiser V8 by Delta4x4

Germany's Delta4x4, as the name suggests, focuses on SUV and other off-roaders. Last month the Bavarian company released their upgrades for the Toyota Land Cruiser V8.

Starting with the engine, the tuners manage to extract an additional 32 hp from the seventh generation Land Cruiser resulting in 318 hp with 780 Nm of torque and a 218 km/h top speed. Not every driver is at ease with such power under the hood, so Delta4x4 also offer a high performance brake system. This brake system consists of a six-piston caliper, a 396 mm perforated brake disc and a steel wrapped hose providing precise pedal response and extreme stopping power.

The usual aesthetic options are available too, like an EU approved front bar (a bigger front bar is available for export markets), handmade 101 mm stainless steel side and rear bars, stainless steel double pipe exhaust system and 17 to 23 inch wheels.

It all comes at a price though, the brake system for one costs Euro 6,760, the front, side and rear bars will set you back almost Euro 5,000, the engine managment update almost Euro 2,000 and the exhaust system Euro 700.

Press release:

Just in time for the official German launch on March 8th 2008, delta4x4 introduces a complete new custom concept for the new Land Cruiser. As is expected delta4x4 combines excellent craftsmanship with sophisticated technology to deliver accessories for the discerning SUV driver.

For some the power surge of up to 218 kmph by the delta4x4 performance increase compared to the standard 286 kmph could cause a little anxiety but with the delta4x4 high-performance brake system any uneasiness is quickly forgotten. This high-performance brake system includes a six-piston caliper, a 396 mm perforated brake disk and a steel-wrapped hose. It provides a precise pedal response, allowing an allround secure and relaxing driving pleasure at a maximum torque of 780 Nm.

”Back to basics“ the Bavarian 4 wheel specialist delta4x4 prides itself on high quality handmade stainless steel accessories

delta4x4 fits Toyota’s new SUV with either a front bar that meets EU pedestrian protection safety standards or a bigger front bar for the export market. Also in the line handmade and hand polished 101mm stainless steel side and rear bars. To accentuate its powerful appearance and to render the vehicle’s sound more deep and mighty, delta4x4 has equipped the V8 with a stainless steel double pipe exhaust system.
The broad sporty wheels and the elegant 17 to 23 inch rim program provides the vehicle with a high urban profile.

2007 Toyota FT-HS Concept

The Toyota FT-HS hybrid sports concept will make its debut at the 2007 North American International Auto Show.

Pairing a potent hybrid powertrain with essential sports car fundamentals, the FT-HS concept was a joint undertaking of Calty, Toyota's North American-based, research and design center located in Newport Beach, Calif., and Toyota's California-based Advanced Product Strategy Group. The design team was assigned the task of creating a mid-priced sports car that integrates ecology and emotion in a concept that addresses the question "What is a suitable sports car for the 21st Century?"

"Drivers today are not satisfied with cars that are simply fast," said Kevin Hunter, vice president, Calty Design Research. "In addition to driving enjoyment, today's drivers are concerned about safety, ecology and social responsibility."

The FT-HS incorporates hybrid capability while maintaining sports car essentials, such as a sleek profile, lightweight aero-dynamic materials, and an advanced high-output powertrain for revolutionary acceleration and optimal performance. This 21st century sports car is fun-to-drive with eco-friendly benefits such as ultra-low emissions and fuel efficiency. The FT-HS appeals to an emerging buyer who grew up eco-conscious and perceives technology as a necessity, not a luxury.

This two-plus-two concept is a front-engine, rear-drive sports car with a projected zero-to-60 acceleration in the four-second range. A powerful V6, 3.5L-engine is coupled with a 21st century sports hybrid system with a target power output of approximately 400-horsepower. At a mid-priced market position, FT-HS would be a true "attainable exotic" with 21st Century performance.

FT-HS expresses the core values of a Toyota Brand design strategy that combines two key elements: J-Factor and Vibrant Clarity. J-Factor refers to the local and global acceptance of Japanese-inspired design and cultural sensibilities. Vibrant Clarity is the design language used to express the J-factor much in the same way that L-Finesse is the language of the Lexus Division. It is the combination of perfect imbalance, freeform geometrics and integrated component architecture. The result of these three elements is subtractive mass, a minimalist style that is not only lightweight, but also looks lightweight.

The exterior design was led by Calty designer, Alex Shen. From a design perspective, the theme of the FT-HS achieves sleek, taut surfaces in its exterior features – especially in the doors and body style. The front and rear have been sculpted to remove mass around key functional components. Freeform geometrics define the integration of fluid surfaces contrasting hard-edge "Aero-Corners" which promote smooth airflow and reduce turbulence.

The roof has a distinctive scooped-out section designed to reduce aerodynamic drag and provide head room at the key areas. Made from carbon fiber Kevlar, the roof retracts so that the roof panel and back window pivot fluidly in a downward motion to stow in the rear seat space.

The vehicle's triangular profile has a floating "C" pillar, aero corners, a full upper-body pan, and innovative open top. A hood features a scalloped channel, exposing the hybrid engine. Integrated component architecture can be seen in the aerospace-inspired lighting. The tail lamp unit spans the entire rear, and has an integrated retractable spoiler. Light-emitting diode (LED) clusters are located in the headlamps and the wing for energy-efficiency and decreased heat loss. Other exterior features include a speed-activated wing that elevates at high speed for additional stability and traction. The rear showcases a carbon fiber lower diffuser with integrated wide exhaust and carbon fiber wheels.

The driver-oriented interior was created by Calty designer, William Chergosky and exudes sleekness, technology, and performance. The lean skeletal look is achieved with exposed cross-car architecture and high-tech materials such as carbon fiber, and titanium. FT-HS' interior features create a dedicated driver's cockpit which include subtractive mass expressions such as cross-car instrument panel structure and delta wing driver pod. The delta-wing driver's pod integrates many useful functions into a lightweight structural unit. All of the important functions and details are presented almost exclusively to the driver. For example, touch-trace sensors which surround the driver and act as tactile guides for finger controls when traveling at high speeds.

By eliminating the "B" pillar and creating a suspended "C" pillar, the minimalist style works in conjunction with subtractive mass. An integrated instrument panel surrounds the driver, creating an enclosed pod effect. Armrests flow seamlessly into the door and surrounding interior.

Seating is optimized for a lightweight appearance and function: the seating accommodates four and then coverts to a two-seater when the roof retracts. The passenger-seat area is open with a simple exposed airbag on the cross-car beam.

A telescoping hub-less steering wheel incorporates semi-automatic paddle shifters and allows the meter to be shifted forward in order to shorten the driver's focus-time between the road and meter, and ultimately enhance driver focus.

“FT-HS redefines the sports car experience not only with styling but also in function and performance,” said Hunter. “The FT-HS is Toyota’s answer to the question ‘What is a suitable sports car for the 21st Century?’”

New Toyota Sprint Series (UK)

The Japanese have been providing affordable performance cars to the masses for decades now and Toyota have had their fair share of product offerings. So it only seems fair that Toyota (GB) PLC has signed up to be the major sponsor of the new Toyota Sprint Series 2008. A celebration of Toyota products new and old, the series aims to bring enthusiasts from all over the UK together to compete against the clock for top honours.

Toyota has some serious pedigree in motorsport, particularly in World Rally Championship racing. The rally Celica’s and Corolla’s of the 80’s and 90’s were race vehicles based of street production models such as the Celica GT4’s, so expect to see some of these machines competing. In fact, Toyota still participates in competitive rallying with the TRD branded Corolla’s in some countries such as Australia. So from the classic high revving 1600cc Mk1 MR2 to the twin turbo 6 cylinder shove of a Supra, there should be plenty of action throughout the year for both spectator and competitor alike.

Press Release

TOYOTA BACKS NEW SPRINT SERIES

What’s the hottest prospect on a race track: a road-spec’ 21st century MR2 Roadster or a fully-tuned and kitted 1990s-vintage Supra? The speed and handling potential of contemporary and classic Toyota models will be put to the test when they go head to head in a new motor sport challenge, the Toyota Sprint Series 2008.

Toyota (GB) PLC has signed up as leading sponsor of the series, designed to give Toyota enthusiasts an exciting and affordable first step into motor sport. A provisional calendar of five events will get under way in March, open to experienced, intermediate and novice drivers.

Honours will be fought for in up to 10 classes, covering the complete spectrum of performance, from diesels and sub-1600cc cars to fully modified and tuned machines. Throughout the season driver points will be awarded in each class, so any driver has the potential to become overall champion. The basic principle of a sprint is for each competitor to complete a timed run, rather than to qualify and race side by side as in other forms of circuit motor sport.

The series is the brainchild of Barry Cross and Adrian Smith, who share a passion for Toyota cars and motor sport. They have joined forces with Javelin Trackdays to design and launch the competition, encouraged by the success of a one-off event in October. They are hopeful tuning and aftermarket companies will be keen to support the championship to show what they can offer Toyota owners, and that the open nature of the series will encourage a healthy entry list.
“It’s our aim to create a great championship that will help further the tuning scene in the UK,” they said. “We have brought together a professional team that will provide enthusiasts with an exciting, enjoyable, friendly and affordable sporting experience.”

New 2009 Toyota Matrix

Toyota took a fresh look at one of the prime vehicles they use to target 16 to 30 year old drivers, and ended up with the slick 2009 Toyota Matrix. With a redesigned exterior meant to flow from back to front, the new version of Toyota's five-door crossover is impressive from the outside.

The look of the car will definitely be a prime selling point for Toyota. A spokesman for the company said the Matrix, "may have the body of a five-door hatch, but it comes with the soul of a two-door sports car.”

Indeed, the car was styled more like a coupe, but in such a way that cabin space was not reduced. In fact, rear passengers should feel like they have a little more room for their legs, as the interior has become more functional. A more efficient heating and airconditioning system helps keep passengers comfortable, while being less of a strain on the engine.

Three grades of the Toyota Matrix will be available, including a standard, S, and XRS version. Owners of the S and XRS will also get a front underbody spoiler with a larger fog lamp bezel, as well as a rear underbody spoiler. Rear deck spoilers are standard on the XRS.

Matrix purchasers will get to choose between a 1.8 liter four cylinder, producing 132 horsepower and 128 ft-lb of torque, or a 2.4 liter DOHC four cylinder with 158 horsepower and 162 ft-lb of torque. The smaller engine does better on gas, seeing between 25 and 31 miles per gallon, while the bigger engine gets between 21 and 30 mpg.

Sadly, the 170 horsepower previously available on the XRS has not returned. With no information about the car's weight, we expect the performance figures may be a little less than satisfying.

All Wheel Drive is standard on the XRS, but optional for the S grade. Base purchasers will be saddled with 16 inch wheels, but this car was definitely meant to have the 18-inch alloys Toyota made available. 17-inch aluminum wheels are also an option.

The car should be in showrooms by late 2008, but pricing has not been announced.

Toyota Supra Fast & Furious

The current owner (Craig Lieberman) purchased this 1994 Toyota Supra with 54,000 miles on the clock in June of 1998. Previously owned by a business-man, the car was totally unmodified when sold to the current owner. However, that was soon to change.

Immediately upon acquisition, the car underwent a host of modifications in the interest of using the car for advertising and promotion. Companies such as GReddy, Eibach, Stillen, Clarion and NOS were all participants in this project. The first round of modifications included new candy yellow paint, 18” wheels/tires, a mild sound system upgrade and some body kit components, plus engine detailing. The car then toured the show circuit, doing quite well. At least 6 major magazine features were done on the car. Over that winter, the car underwent its’ next round of modifications. The Supra was treated to custom spec T-66 turbo done by Vinny Ten, owner of the world’s fastest Supra. Nitrous Oxide Systems installed a custom NOS system, GReddy installed some of their trick components and Stillen installed their Formula 1 AP Racing brakes. Custom interior touches were added as well as a new audio/video system comprised of three TV monitors, a VCR, a DVD, PlayStation and custom neon glasswork, courtesy of AudiOptions. The engine was completely detailed, chromed and polished. All of the performance modifications received inspection and final tuning by a Toyota-engineer specializing in Supra Turbo engines and performance applications. The car then completed in the First Annual “Ultimate Street Car Challenge,” a grueling drag race, autocross and car show, all in one weekend. The car took 1st Place Overall. The car also began to tour the show circuit for the balance of 1999. Its crowning achievement was the receipt of the prestigious “Meguiar’s Hottest Car of the Year” award in 1999. The car also won Best of Show in numerous events around the country, scored several first place finishes and has even received features on KABC and KTLA local news broadcasts. But the best was yet to come.

In the Spring of 2000, the car was spotted by recruiters for Universal Pictures and was selected to be the primary car for the upcoming blockbuster, “The Fast and The Furious.” Universal rented the car and began to alter its appearance for an even more aggressive look. Lamborghini orange paint was applied (the only car in the movie to receive an actual high-quality paint job), as was a new Bomex body kit (the first of its kind, imported from Japan). New 19” wheels were added, as well as a new rear wing, a new TRD hood and some one-off Troy Lee graphics. The studio then set out to build 5 cosmetic replicas, shown in various stages of completion, all designed to replicate this original. All replicas were destroyed during the filming of the movie. This Supra is the primary car in the movie… the movie features the car extensively. This particular car was driven by one of the stars, Paul Walker and was used for all the glamour and close-up shots. Stunt replicas were used for all the abusive driving. Upon completion of the motion picture, the car was returned to the owner with no damage, having been carefully protected by the film’s Transportation Managers. Numerous 8” x 10” photos were provided to the owner showing the car in action during the movie, as was a host of other souvenirs. The owner also served as Technical Advisor on the picture and provided dialog assistance for the script.

The car then appeared at the Hollywood Premier in June of 2001 where a stage was built for the car at the Press Junkets which ran about the same time. The car has appeared in over 200 US newspapers and more than 500 foreign newspapers and dozens of domestic and international publications. International release was scheduled for September of 2001. In the interim, the car is touring the show circuit on behalf of Universal Pictures to promote the movie. As of this writing, more than 20 magazines on three continents have shot the car with 6 covers to its credit. The car has been carefully prepared, serviced and maintained throughout the last two years and while making its show appearances. It is sure to be a collector’s item, with its value placed at over $150,000. The car currently is actually driven and it has almost 60,000 miles on it and still retains the A/C, tilt, cruise and full amenities. It has always been garaged, is hand polished weekly and is totally reliable. It is never raced or abused. Careful attention was paid to every detail as to ensure the utmost reliability.
